MULTAQ  (DRONEDARONE HYDROCHLORIDE):  This medication is used if you have had certain types of irregular heartbeat (paroxysmal or persistent atrial fibrillation) in the past but now have a normal heart rhythm. It helps you keep a normal heart rhythm and lowers your chance of having to go to the hospital for atrial fibrillation. Dronedarone is known as an antiarrhythmic drug. This medication should not be used if you have permanent atrial fibrillation because of the increased risk of very serious side effects. See also Warning section.   FDA Approval Date: 2009-07-01 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  a-fib Lost sense of smell after a few weeks. Known side effect, but I incidence is less than 1%. Had three episodes over two years - first followed by cardioversion, second by ablation and third by cardioversion. Started taking Multaq after third episode and haven't had a problem since.  5  afib None The French health authority have stopped paying for it so I'll have to stop. They claim ineffective and side effects. For me after several other drugs, two ablations and electro shock, this is the first time I've been trouble free for ten years M 77 1 years

4  atrial fibrillation I experienced occasional itching and leg spasms. My doctor prescribed Multaq after my second ablation. My Afib episodes were far less frequent than before, but it was hard to tell if this was due to Multaq, the ablation, or lifestyle changes. After a year my insurance company stopped covering Multaq. Because it is so expensive, I quit taking it after consulting my doctor. This seemed like the right move as the months went by and I had only a few afib episodes. Lately, the episodes have increased. I changed insurance during open enrollment and the new company covers Multaq. If the current trend continues, I will ask my doctor if I should resume taking it. M 67 1 years

4  AFib, Following Tikosyn & others No apparent side effects. Directions to take with food likely due to solubility (oil vs water)because drug uptake considerably greater (15% with food vs. 5% without. #'s are my recall from med insert small print details)I get breakthrough af episodes about monthly, lasting about a day. In the interim, I experience short lived arrhythmia every few days, lasting a couple minutes to an hour. M 69 5 months

5  atrial fibrillation slight stomach discomfort if not taken with a meal I was previously on Rythmol for 2 1/2 yrs, was changed to Multaq because of breakthrough a-fib, fatigue and a general "drugged" feeling. Cardiologist told me Multaq has less side effects. The Multaq makes me much less tired. I still have occasional VERY brief runs of the a-fib, and can sometimes get dizzy if I get up too fast. I like Multaq better than Rythmol.I'm giving it a 5 because I feel that less side effects are a good thing, and even though I still get the rare brief breakthrough, this med has helped me quite a bit.  1  atrial fibrillation horrible itching, extreme tiredness, extreme weakness, very dry skin, reduced liver function, reduced kidney function, reduced lung function. I am a retired pharmacist writing for my wife. DO NOT TAKE THIS POISON! It almost put my wife on dialysis and in need of a liver transplant. She cannot breathe well due to reduced lung function. Read the FDA warnings. It is $391 per month and is no better than Amiodarone which is $8 per month. NOT RECOMMENDED! M 79 3 months

4  mixed arrhythmias Stomach problems for the first few days only. None since. I have had many runs of tachycardia and afib, 10 cardioversions, 3 defibrillations for vfib and torsades. I have an implanted defibrillator that has fired four times. I had cardiac arrest trying Tikosyn. Propafenone and Flecainide each stopped working after a couple of years. Multaq in combination with Toprol seems to work. I have about a dozen tiny bursts (2 or 3 seconds each) of afib or skipping every day, which I did not have on the other drugs. But so far, no long spells. F 63 2 months

1  Doctor changed AFIB drug Two years ago I lost my father due to this medicine. It caused lung issues that sent my father to the hospital two weeks before Thanksgiving and he died 3 1/2 weeks later because of it. He kept telling the doctor that he couldn't breath and since he had heart issues, it was assumed that it was his heart and he NEVER had his lungs checked out until it was too late. I would advise anyone being put on this medicine to NOT take it. It could mean your life. F 66 1 weeks
