LO LOESTRIN FE  (ETHINYL ESTRADIOL; NORETHINDRONE ACETATE):  This combination hormone medication is used to prevent pregnancy. It contains 2 hormones: norethindrone (a progestin) and ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen). It works mainly by preventing the release of an egg (ovulation) during your menstrual cycle. It also makes vaginal fluid thicker to help prevent sperm from reaching an egg (fertilization) and changes the lining of the uterus (womb) to prevent attachment of a fertilized egg. This product also contains a small amount of iron (ferrous fumarate) in inactive tablets taken during the fourth week. The inactive pills do not contain any hormones. These tablets are meant to keep you in the habit of taking 1 tablet each day and do not have enough iron to treat iron deficiency. Besides preventing pregnancy, birth control pills may make your periods more regular, decrease blood loss and painful periods, decrease the risk of ovarian cysts, and also treat acne. Using this medication does not protect you or your partner against sexually transmitted diseases (such as HIV, gonorrhea, chlamydia).   FDA Approval Date: 2010-10-21 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  Heavy periods due to fibroids Slight headaches, elevated blood pressure I was never able to take bc pills in my twenties, they always made me feel nauseous. Not with Lo Loestrin fe. My periods are not heavy and it has regulated my cycle from coming every 15 days to a normal 21 - 24 day. And as a bonus my skin is extremely clear! 46 9 months

5  Bleeding too much, severe cramps In the beginning (first 4-5 months) crazy migraines, depression, dizziness, nausea, extreme fatigue and constant spotting. After about 6 months, I had no migraines, no period, no cramping, no depression, no fatigue. I also worked out 2 hr a day, 6 days a week before starting the pill and after, once the hormones leveled out. I feel great now! F 49 10 months

5  To not get pregnant Its truly hard to peg if something Im experiencing is due to Lo Loestrin Fe, but something I had noticed about a year in of taking the pills is extreme fatigue, which also results in irritation and lack of energy. I got blood work and sleeping tests done and nothing. Ive altered my diet and did the whole30 to rule out foods possibly doing this to me but nothing... beginning to wonder or messed up hormones from these pills are causing it. After about a year of taking these pills I stopped getting my period all together and get it about once or twice a year now. Ive been sexually active the entirety of being on the pill (I take it religiously every day at the same time) and have had no pregnancies. F 25 2 years

5  To wean off estrogen Lost 10 pounds. Felt much better, like back to my normal self compared to higher estrogen pills. Felt a little easily irritated but not sure if it was related to the pills or just less tolerance for things with age. Hoping my dr can leave me on these as long as possible. F 48 28 days

5  Cramps & Heavy Bleeding Light nausea when first switching and headaches The first 3 months I was very nauseous, but after that switch period I felt amazing. Overall I only had headaches and light nausea during my period. I had a light period, felt fine on and off my period, and had little weight gain. I wouldn't recommend this pill to a lot of people though since I know so many women who do have a lot of side effects with Lo Loestrin. F 19 1 years

5  Pregnancy Prevention When I first went on the Pill, I was a little crazy. Emotional. And some mild cramping and side effects. This was my only experience with hormonal birth control but it was great for me. I started it when the doc told me to (on the first day of my period) and took the pill every evening around dinner time. I had NO period while on the pill (which the doctor assured me was a good thing) and felt like everything regulated quickly. No other side effects except for dryness during sex. The price is frustrating (on various insurance policies it's been anywhere from $30 to $115) but I didn't want to mess with something that was working. I recently stopped taking it to start a family but have overall been happy with my experience. F 33 3 years

5  ovarian cysts, regulate periods None-maybe a headache here and there..although,those could be life and work related. Best birth control ever! I have been on BC since I was 19 due to my cysts. I've have many issues with other BC such as kidney pain, cystic acne, etc. I am a small petite person, I needed a low hormone pill to make sure i had a period every month. I was so thankful when this came out. I'm not "big" enough body fat wise for a lot of BC out there. And this is perfect. I still miss a period here and there, but I'm active and eat super healthy so that's not abnormal to miss a period. Great BC for us small/active females. And I still have a very high sex drive. No issues whatsoever. F 28 2 years

5  Severe menstrual cramps, PMS, acne Breast tenderness, dizziness and nausea in beginning. First time on a BC pill, about to finish my second pack, and I feel great! The first four days or so I felt very dizzy and nauseous after taking the pill - almost as if I were on a boat. I was hoping it would subside soon, and it did! Now I don't feel dizzy or nauseous, thankfully, and everything's going well. My body hasn't fully adjusted yet though, and I'm getting my period randomly for several days in the middle of my pack, and not when I take the placebos. But, it is lighter and much less painful so far, which is great. The acne is definitely calming down and any pimples I do get aren't too bad and are easy to manage (ie they go away quickly). Although my boobs are sore as hell, I don't mind because they've definitely gotten bigger (which is never a bad thing :)). Oh and my moods are definitely more leveled out. F 26 2 months

5  Birth Control, Heavy Periods, PCOS None whatsoever The only BC pill I will ever take. Lowest possible dose of hormones, which means I barely get my period at all anymore after the initial 3 months. Due to PCOS I used to get unbearable cramps/back pain and had majorly heavy bleeding for a week. Now it's pretty nonexistant! I like having the extra dose of Iron, too. F 27 1 years

5  Birth control Irregular periods for first 3-4 months. I FINALLY feel normal on BC! I have been on BC since age 16 (now 26) and have run the gamut of side effects. From headaches, to mood swings, to acne and pain, low sex drive has been my biggest complaint over the past few years. My gyno prescribed this due to my complaints of low libido. I tried it and for the first 4 months I really didn't notice a change. I missed a couple of periods all together which freaked me out, and I started looking into the copper IUD. However, by months 5/6, I started to realize my sex drive returning. I thought maybe it was a fluke, but it stuck around. I realize now (on month 11) that I have had a period every other month, so I'm less concerned about pregnancy. I take the pill every evening between 9 and 12 usually. Have not had any breakthrough bleeding except for when I missed a day and a half and had super light spotting. My periods on other BCs have been very heavy, but on this, even having a period every 2 months, they are light and end within 4 days. My moods have been very stable, my face is usually pretty clear (except week before my period when I get some breakouts), and I just feel great overall!! My cramps have also lessened. I will definitely stick with this pill, as I finally feel like I found the right match for me! I love that it is low in hormones. The only downside is the cost. Luckily, I have great insurance that makes it about $33/month when I get it in packs of 3. Yay! F 26 11 months
