SPRINTEC  (ETHINYL ESTRADIOL; NORGESTIMATE):  This combination hormone medication is used to prevent pregnancy. It contains 2 hormones: a progestin and an estrogen. It works mainly by preventing the release of an egg (ovulation) during your menstrual cycle. It also makes vaginal fluid thicker to help prevent sperm from reaching an egg (fertilization) and changes the lining of the uterus (womb) to prevent attachment of a fertilized egg. If a fertilized egg does not attach to the uterus, it passes out of the body. Besides preventing pregnancy, birth control pills may make your periods more regular, decrease blood loss and painful periods, decrease your risk of ovarian cysts, and also treat acne. Using this medication does not protect you or your partner against sexually transmitted diseases (such as HIV, gonorrhea, chlamydia).   FDA Approval Date: 2002-09-25 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Heavy periods, blood disorder Dizziness, extreme nausea, mood swings, depression, excessive crying, weight gain, increased anxiety, abdominal pain I honestly let the side effects go too far. I thought it was just my body being an awful human body, but it just progressively got worse the longer I was on it and I thought it was just me. My periods got heavier and worse than they were in the first place and I got to the point where I would get sick and throw up when I was on my period. Don't stay on this at all. I've been on it too long and got to the point where anything set me off and made me anxious and I hated myself and how I felt all the time. F 24 2 years

1  Acne. Pregnancy Extreme sickness before and during period, anxiety attacks, general anxiety not being able to do things, scared, depressed, feeling hopeless What can I say, reading these reviews makes it all make sense. I've been a mess since starting this birth control. Last night which would be the first night of my period I was so sick. Diarrhea, migraine so bad couldn't open eyes, nausea, you name it. Never had it this bad till starting this pill. My anxiety has been so bad the last couple months I feel helpless so much anxiety I have been hospitalized for panic attacks. Thankfully I have xanax. Listen, do not take this poison!!! F 25 3 months

3  Heavy cycles Abdominal cramping, anxiety, brain fog My cycles were so heavy I had to get a blood transfusion and everyone told me to start a birth control to help with my cycles. It was kind of rushed because of my situation but I started taking sprintec and for the first few months I didn't notice many side effects other than random abdominal cramps. These pills have 100% helped regulate my cycles and for that I am thankful. However for the past couple of years I've had severe anxiety, some depression, and just not feeling like myself at all. I'm always tired, have some brain fog and just never feel great. I've had so much lab work done trying to figure out what it could be and everything always comes back normal. I'm starting to think it's been the birth control this whole time. I'm scared to stop taking it because my heavy cycles will come back, but I'm desperate to feel normal again. F 31 4 years

2  Regulate periods and prevent pregnancy I was prescribed Sprintec because my Dr. suspected that I have PCOS from my irregular periods, excess weight issues and moderate to severe acne (among a few other symptoms) I received 4 packs and took as directed. The first couple of months went great, I lost 10lbs without effort, acne began clearing up and my cycle was regular. The third month I noticed I was dizzy, nauseous and my anxiety was cranked up so much that I quit caffeine (and I LOVE my cup of coffee in the morning) once I started the placebo pills in that pack I instantly felt better. I didn't necessarily think anything of it but now that I'm a week into the new pack, I've started to notice dizziness, nausea and anxiety again. I just left a message with my provider but I'm not planning on continuing. I'd rather be a little chubby with acne and pregnancy scares than barely be able to function. F 30 4 months

1  Prevent pregnancy, manage PCOS Anxiety, depression, irritability, excessive crying When I first started taking Sprintec, it was great, I had no side effects. Then about a month in I started having horrible bouts of depression, which I assumed were caused by some events in my life, but it continued. I have since been diagnosed with PMDD (which I do NOT attribute to this medication; I have had it for long before I was on Sprintec) and was put on an antidepressant. That controlled the depressive symptoms for a while but now it is back and worse than ever. I did some research and decided Sprintec was making my existing depression that much worse so I am in the process of changing to Yaz which will hopefully be better for me. Long story short, this birth control made my existing PMDD so so so much worse than it has ever been and I am looking forward to being off if it. I also cry at the drop of a hat it seems since being on Sprintec. And once I start, it takes FOREVER to stop crying. And for absolutely no reason which is extremely frustrating. F 19 8 months

1  Cysts I have been on sprintec and I have also taken tri sprintec for almost 9 years now. I was prescribe it when I was 14 years old to treat ovarian cysts and I can honestly say I have no idea who I am. It has been amazing at preventing pregnancy however, I have lost myself completely. I don't know who I am without it, I am constantly anxious, depressed, I lash out constantly, I've experienced on and off fatigue for about 5 years now, my weight is unmanageable and the PMS makes me hate myself. On top of that I have terrible headaches and back pain. My partner is getting a vasectomy soon so I will be coming off but I still have no idea who I'll be off of it and it's terrifying. I almost wish I never took it but I was forced to believe I had no other options. F 23 8 years

1  Birth control Unbearable anxiety DO NOT TAKE THIS PILL!! I struggle with general anxiety and this pill made it to the point that I could not leave the house without having an anxiety attack. I was terrified to go anywhere and could not figure out why. Sprintec put me in fight or flight mode 24/7. I was previously on Previfem which they say is the same as Sprintec, but it is definitely not. I took myself off of Sprintec 5 days ago and the raging anxiety is finally gone. This is the worst birth control ever. F 34 2 months

1  acne and menstrual cramps I have had extreme irritability/anxiety and did not realize this pill was contributing. I had been put on Buspar to help with anxiety the last 41/2 months. However, switched to Yaz and started feeling more myself within 1st week of pack. Not sure even need Buspar on low dosage anyways. I was angry a lot on this Sprintec and feeling depressed at times due to feeling that way. Thankfully, I am feeling much more comfortable in my skin on Yaz. Not sure if Sprintec has too much estrogen for me or what, just glad i'm feeling better and everyone around me is too. F 16 1 years

1  Just for a bc Nauseous all the time. Breasts hurt so bad, and they've grown, which isn't what I want. Anxiety and extreme anger over little things. On edge. I feel like I have a ridiculously short fuse. I am a positive, peppy person who rarely cries and this has made me a negative, nervous, angry person. I have very little energy and I don't feel like getting up. I stopped taking the pill last night after a complete meltdown over nothing. I'm so unhappy. I've never been depressed before but I've been feeling like nothing matters. I will never take this again. F 33 48 days

1  Birth control Breast pain, nipple pain This pill sucks. I've been on Aviane for years and had a scare with that so my dr put on this to have heavier periods. I'll take another scare over this stupid pill any day. My breasts and nipples hurt like I am pregnant (what I would assume it would be like.) I haven't even had my period yet on the first pack of this bc and I want off of it!!! F 30 14 days

1  PCOS and acne Initially for the first 2 weeks it gave me horrible side effects nausea, vomiting and headaches. I was planning to get off it but my doctor said it was the adjustment. I gave it another week and the symptoms subsided. Then my acne started to clear up. But the anxiety and depression took over at times it became uncontrollable crying and feeling of hopelessness. It feels awful now. I am worried if I get off the pill my acne will come back. Not to mention that I gained 15 pounds with this BC which is not helping me loose weight. I work out 5 times a week and eat healthy and I can't loose weight. Very unhappy with this BC pill. F 35 6 months
