5  GAD, Panic Slight drowsiness if already fatigued. Changed the direction of my life. At what point would an addiction (physiological, psychological - or both) be preferable to some other condition? I would say when the quality of life with an addiction is infinitely improved when compared to a life without an addiction. One definition of the word "addiction" is: "dependence on or commitment to a habit, practice, or habit-forming substance to the extent that its cessation causes trauma". For me, anxiety and panic were utterly unbearable. Agoraphobia was creeping in, and even then staying home offered little more consolation. Traumatic. If I were to stop taking alprazolam, per the definition of the word "addiction", it would be traumatic. Indeed it would. When a medication's dose isn't increased in years, is effective at treating the symptoms with very little side effects, available as a generic, why cease with the medication? I'm not sure anyone knows if anxiety and panic can be cured, and I would rather have a mild addiction than live the bleak life I once did. M 39 8 years

5  essential tremor None This drug has been my lifesaver so it deserves a review. I have an addictive personality(ex alcoholic). I have taken this drug for 15 years about 3/4 times a week at same dose(50mg) for my essential tremor. It works a treat. The only drug that helps my shakes. I only take it as I need it with work or social stuff where I need to hold my coke or whatever. I often go weeks without taking it or weeks taking it(on holiday). It is definitely not addictive to me and has helped my life sooo much. Don't be put off by people saying its addictive if you think it might help you. no side effects. my miracle drug thankfully M 43 15 years

5  Anxiety and muscle spasms Drowsiness, tiredness, sleepiness Xanax is a wonderful medication. I'm a chronic pain patient and my doctor switched me from Valium to Xanax for both anxiety and muscle spasms. It takes effect very quickly and lasts several hours. It completely relaxes up my tight spasms I experience and overall loosens up my body, thus reducing my pain. It also reduces my severe anxiety and puts me at ease. It's also very mild. I highly recommend it. M 22 4 months

5  Anxiety / Panic Attacks Dry mouth while on it. When the effects wear off, tiredness for about an hour, nothing else. This medication as been a life saver for me, literally! I had an infected tooth with abscess and my dentist knows of my anxiety issues and gave me a script for a few tablet of Xanax. I have a history of PTSD, with Anxiety/Panic Disorder. I used it AS NEEDED, not every day and I cut the .5mg in half to .25mg and it's plenty strong. Will be asking my psychiatrist for this medication. If you suffer from GAD, or Panic disorder I recommend this, but use it responsibly, as it can be addicting, and do NOT drive on it as it slows down reflexes, it takes about 25-30 min to work and about 60 min to reach full potency. I also take Prozac 20MG daily, and didn't cause me any issues combing the two. I'm 6'1'' and weigh 260, so as aforementioned .25mg was plenty. Hope this rating helps someone. M 36 3 times

5  Generalized anxiety disorder Xanax completely relieves my anxiety. I am addicted as I can feel withdrawal effects. However Xanax is much better than taking SSRIs. I took Effexor and gained a lot of weight, much less interest in sex, and felt emotionally disconnected from wife. Also some short term memory loss. Try not to use it for sleep. I notice that I feel depressed in morning if I take Xanax for sleep. Also can only sleep 5 Hours on Xanax and can't go back to sleep. M 46 14 years

5  DEBILITATING ANXIETY + depression None bad, only positive calmness, and good sleep! I suffered from ANXIETY for 20 years that causes my depression. Dr. for 5 years was killing me with SSRI and other antidepressants, none of them help with ANXIETY or depression, So told that I am very sick and can't function I need something ASAP to save me, so dr prescribed 0.5x2 times a day but I only took 0.25 in the morning in about 45 min my ANXIETY went from 10 to 0 my depression was gone at the same time. After 6 months I decided to see if I can get off it, so I quit cold turkey, first 3 days were a choppy sleeping pattern, but that was it, Currently, I am not taking anything at all for a month + now and I am feeling normal. I strongly suggest you force your Dr. to give you a sample and see how you respond. Ask for XANAX only, NOT any other benzo like Klonopin etc. my last 5 years were hell on earth. Ty GOD that he gives wisdom for someone to create this med. M 47 6 months

4  Anxiety/Borderline personality Minor memory loss, emotional instability Xanax helps my anxiety and panic attacks. When I get really aggressive, I take one or max 2 pills and it calms me down after 30 minutes. The problem is that the benefits are short. After a few days, I built a tolerance and somewhat an addiction, but when I cut in half for 2 days and then stop, I have withdrawal symptoms for 24-48 hours (insomnia, anxiety) but after that, I feel ok. If it would cause brain damage that bad, I don't think I could be a part time student and work full time like I do as a pharmacy lab technician. If I take 2 mg, I feel bad the next day, tired, foggy, and I have concentration problems and feel a little depress. If I take 0.5 mg to 1 mg, I feel ok the next day and it has a slight antidepressant effect. M 44 6 months

4  Anxiety Drowsiness Xanax (Alprazolam) has worked phenomenally well for me to help bring down my anxiety. If I know I'm going to be in an anxiety provoking situation, I'll take my 2-3 pills 1-2 hours in advance and I know I'll be ready to deal with whatever is coming. I'm not someone who has ever experienced dependency on a medicine, but I make sure to limit my intake to around 2 times a week at most and I've gone years without using it. I'm giving it a 4/5 despite being 5/5 in efficacy at temporarily removing my anxiety, just because it's a medication that does hold the risk of dependency/withdrawal and that limits how often I take it. Never use it just to fall sleep or feel good and take the smallest working dose as infrequently as possible. M 29 10 years

4  GAD, Insomnia, Tremors Inability to concentrate for long periods of time, slight memory loss, slurred speech, decreased sex drive, decreased creativity, occasional nightmares The side effects of xanax can sound off-putting, but my state of mind/body prior to taking this drug was no great thing either so I decided to try it. The prescribed .25mg was far too powerful and would sometimes cause slurred speech, shortness of breath and excessive production of saliva. These effects would subside after an hour or so and then I was able to get on with my life. My real concern was the inability to concentrate for long periods of time and experiencing some memory loss. I also had a couple of intense nightmares that ranked somewhere on my top 10 list. I reduced the dosage by half and then a quarter and this has allowed me to focus again on family/work and I still get to sleep at night without the bad dreams. The good: Able to relax/sleep Anxiety reduced Generally happier The Bad: Highly addictive/Habit forming Lack of concentration Decrease in sex drive Possible night terrors In many ways Xanax (in very small doses) has made my quality of life better, but this can't be a long term solution.  4  Panic Disorder None Xanax stopped my panic attacks in their tracks, especially when dissolved under the tongue. For anxiety management on a day-to-day basis, I felt my dose was not high enough to prevent -all- anxiety, but it was strong enough to keep me from panicking. After taking more than my prescription allowed, I felt calm and euphoric, but unless I wanted to run out of my prescription early this was not something I did often. Occasionally I used it to help me sleep and it worked. M 29 5 years

4  panic attacks None other than the main reason I was taking it was fear of hep c and planned treatment. Treatment was a success but can't seem to be motivated to withdraw, slowly. There's more to this story. I have also been on methadone for years after a series of accidents. Motorcycle, cut some of thumb off and kidney stones :(.sometimes I think it would be easier to just accept it. I'm not 20 any more. M 56 4 years

4  Anxiety Attacks Taken continuously for long periods or too high a dosage can leave me feeling a little spaced out and forgetful. Puts me in an incredibly calm state. Very effective. Be careful - it's highly addictive. Should only be used in an emergency. Herbal remedies are better for long term use. M 52 10 years
